Gallery - Trek 930, Michael McCullough

Michael writes: "I have had my trek since 1983 and have wondered about it quite a bit. I have a load of miles on it! I bought it from RRB cycles in Kenilworth, Illinois in 1983. It was a frame that was hanging on the wall. Somebody had bought it and had all the parts put onto an Italian frame and left the Trek frame at the shop. I bought it and put 1/2 Campy and 1/2 Suntour Superbe parts on it. It cost $250 (for the frame) and with all the components it ended up being nearly $600."

"It is a 24" frame and is light blue - sort of a BMW teal blue. It has Trek on both sides of the seat tube but not the down tube. There is yellow trim above and below where it says Trek. Derailleur guides are above the bottom bracket. Columbus tubing, bronze head tube badge with black print with no screws. chainstay is 41 cm. no model # on frame. Serial number is: I4I9F82 or perhaps 1419F82."

This is an interesting frame. By the serial number project, the bike is a 79, but it is painted as an 81 (color wrap on seat tube).

The leading "I" in the serial number indicates a 730 but the bike has a Columbus tubing sticker which would mean a 930. Luker White wrote in with this comment: "I recently found a Trek 930 and the original sales receipt. The receipt clearly shows that the serial number is L3B9D69, although I am really hard pressed to see the first character as an "L". It looks a lot like an "I". The dealer would probably have gotten the serial number from the Trek provided invoice (that's the way that it works now at my favorite shop) so that first letter is probably really an "L" . . . . A badly hammered "L" would look very much like an "I"."
