Gallery - 1978 Trek 530 - Kevin Maher

Kevin writes: "I recently refurbished an old Trek frame. The serial number is D4L8N23. This identifies it as a December 1978, model 530 frame, racing geometry, size 24", made from Ishiwata 022 tubing. Here's the story of how it happened . . .

"I bought this frame in 1981 after I had crashed my first Trek. I paid a mechanic at a LBS $100 for it. He had won it in a race, but it didn't fit him. I moved all the parts over from the other frame and rode this bike for several years and many thousands of miles. In 1983, one of the dropouts cracked. I sent the frame back to Trek for repair, which they did. They also repainted it in the same color (deep metallic blue) and affixed different decals, the ones you can see in the photos. While I was waiting, I found a new ride. I placed the repaired frame and fork in the garage and quickly forgot about it.

"Now, more than twenty years and one move later, I decided to build a bike up from left over vintage Campy components stored in my garage. I had decided on using another frame, but when I saw the pristine condition of the Trek and the glorious paint, I quickly changed my mind. A few weeks of poking through the garage and scrounging around town for brakes and I had a complete Campy Record Gruppo from the mid-80's. To round out the build, I added a Nitto stem and bar bought from Rivendell (just as beautiful as the original Cinelli), my favorite saddle and pedals, and a Chris King headset. The wheels have the old Campy Record hubs. I had to build a new rear wheel with a Mavic Open Pro rim. The front wheel has the original Mavic E2 rim and was built by Wheelsmith. I shellacked the Cinelli natural cork ribbon with several coats of amber (Rivendell suggestion). This looks great, but is a little slippery.

"I've now put about 200 miles on this bike. I'd forgotten how wonderful riding this bike feels. I'm so happy that I've rediscovered it."
