Trek Bike Production by Model, Late 1980 through 1986

The Trek serial number lists from late 1980 through 1986 afforded the opportunity to calculate the production of bikes by model and year for this time period. These data are presented in the table below. One can understand how popular (or rare) a particular model might be. For example, there were only 134 of the top-of-the-line model 170 frames made.

The annual totals show that domestic production increased quickly from 1981 through 1983. In 84, production leveled out and in 85 and 86 production decreased markedly. This reflected the difficulty Trek had in producing the new bonded aluminum and carbon-tubed bikes. Details of the production and sales problems during this period are described on the Trek history page.

Caution - These data are for calendar year, not model year. Late in each calendar year, Trek changed production to the next model year. We believe this model year shift occurred in September or October. Unfortunately, the date is not specifically identified each year in the serial number list.

Our thanks to Mitch Hawker for converting the seven serial number pages into a single Excel spreadsheet file of 2700 lines, on which he calculated the data below.

* The "Unknown" line is for runs for which the model of the bike could not be read on the paper copy.

** There are two pages missing from the paper list that was received from Trek. In the table above they are represented by the line "Missing Page"in the 1982 and 1985 columns.

*** The serial number list for 1986 contains a series of seven lines that refer to subcontracted bikes and frames made by Merida (Merida Industry Co., Ltd based in Taiwan). These lines are shown at the bottom of the table below. Trek had other subcontracted bikes during this time period that did not make the serial number list. The reason these bikes appeared on the list is apparently because they used the same serial number format (seven digit numbers) that was used for bikes made in the USA by Trek. We believe the other bikes subcontracted during this period used different serial number formats.
